Anyone else having a tough time coming back from the three day weekend?
That makes two of us.
My best friend's bachelorette party was here in Portland and it was a seriously good time. There is something about a solid girls weekend that just makes you feel whole again. There are also a few things that make you feel lethargic the first day back to work ;) Worth it though, am I right?
Needless to say, I was ready to re-fuel come Tuesday, and that is exactly what I did. Revitalization came in smoothie form, with a healthy dose of greens and probiotic-rich kefir.
What's kefir you ask?
Great question! Kefir is a tangy, cultured, drinkable yogurt that contains billions of live active probiotic strains. It is different than yogurt in the fact that it has many probiotic strains that yogurt does not. The probiotics in kefir are actually able to colonize the gut instead of just passing through. The probiotics in yogurt are transient, meaning they help maintain gut health while passing through, but they do not actually remain in the digestive tract. Kefir is high in protein, making it the perfect smoothie addition without needing to add a protein powder.
Try this make-ahead breakfast smoothie anytime you need to cure a case of the Mondays.
PROBIOTIC GREEN SMOOTHIE
- 2 cups kefir
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 cup frozen mango (or any frozen fruit of choice)
- 1 banana
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- large handful spinach
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1 tablespoon hemp seeds (chia seeds or flaxseed meal work too)
- Blend all ingredients in blender.
- Divide into two pint size mason jars.
- Enjoy at home or on the go!
Note: You can make these the night before so all you have to do in the morning is grab-and-go.
